"The Black Student Union"??????

This is NOT a Hypothetical, but an actual Occurence. Two evenings ago myself and my 14 year old son Erick went to his High School Orientation for this coming year 2008-2009.I'm sure most of you are familiar with the format of these orientations but I will give a brief summary for those of you who may not be.The H/S Orientation is to provide information to Parents and Incoming Students what they (the high school) has to offer in the way of Classes,Organizations,**Sports Activities and Clubs etc...Well...One of these "Clubs" or so-called "Unions" was "The BLACK STUDENT Union" open ONLY...to...That's Right...Black Students! Needless to say this did not set well with myself, nor many of the other parents who also were there, ranging in age from 30-50 years old and from different racial backgrounds,as far as being Racist..as I'm sure I will be called for posting this question.I don't feel ANY Club or Union should be allowed to operate on school grounds that promotes racial division"Do You?

"The Black Student Union"??????
I'm with you! I do not agree with a "black only" union. That is promoting that we are still segregating our students. People complain about the whites being racist, but here there are BET, Black History Month, Hispanic Month (or whatever they call it)....You don't see us having "WHITE HISTORY MONTH" because if we do, we'll get SLAMMED with being racist. Same goes with a WHITES ONLY CLUB in Schools. It's like back in the old days when they had a Whites Only Restaurant and they didn't serve blacks. It was WRONG THEN and it's WRONG NOW with having a Segregated Club for BLACKS ONLY. How much longer do we have to pay for our ancestors mistakes? They want integrated services, and FAIR and EQUAL Oportunities, yet they are ALLOWED to do this????? They are hypocrites to their own race!!!!! I would be pissed, and will be if by the time my son goes to High School and they have something like this. We might as well go back to Whites Only Restaurants, and White Clubs, and so on and so forth....Know what I mean? I'm not racist, but having something like this is hypocritical to their own race and they are being RACIST! They are being racist against Whites, Hispanics, and any other nationalities that are going to that school! How dare them promote such a thing! UGH...Sounds like we're going back to the segregated ways.
Reply:It's not there to promote racial division. They're not in the meetings blasting other races. The media has been brainwashing society for years into believing white is good, black is bad.

Bad guys in westerns wore black

Black cats are bad luck

Wicked witches wear black

black jelly beans %26amp; black liccorice are NASTY

They're embracing their blackness. How can you love others if you can't love yourself?
Reply:I hate those unions too. I think we should have an "People of All Pigmentations Union" (PAPU) to make fun of how rediculous the idea of "race" even is, and how people feed into it SO much that they base their lives around judging things by color.
Reply:absolutely not
Reply:So form an Italian, Scottish, Irish, German, Jewish, Polish or whatever student union. I serious doubt anyone would call that racist. We say "black" or "African American" because most of us don't know the exact country our ancestors came from. If that's the case ALL organizations that exist with the aforementioned title must be racist too. Yet the Anti-Defamation League or the National Italian American Foundation aren't labeled racist like the Naacp is now (which was founded by whites btw).
Reply:why dont you open a white students union
Reply:OK I just had to put my 2 cents in after reading Dons answer

I happen to think the black club idea isnt bad depending on what the club is supposed to do. Does it teach heritage, language, history? It should really be called the African Club. Kinda like a French Club. If thats what they are teaching. As far as no tother races being involved is just plain dumb. I know if I tried to start a caucasion club it would not go over well at all. Probably end up with all sorts of KKK crap sent to me. I dont and never will understand why people insist on seperating each other. Therre is nothing wrong with learning about heritage but it should include everyone interested in learning. As far as Dons answer it takes more than the wildwest, jellybeans and cats to make a person feel bad about theemselves. I WILL NEVER STOP TRYING TO SCREW IN LIGHTBULBS!!!! even though every one says It takes 3 of me :)
Reply:Are you or your student interested in joining the Black Student Union or are you whining because it's closed off to you? If it was open to other races would you be interested in joining? Is the school you're talking about white majority or racially diverse?

If it's such a big deal to you, then go to the principal, the superintendent, whatever, and talk to them about it.
Reply:There are clubs that are only for white students you find out once they give you the look. Anyway if it was called a white union it would look very bad since there were alot of white unions back then but they allowed no other race to enter..it was just bad...you know that. Anyway they have a hispanic one too and Indian...why? because thoes two groups never had us blacks as slaves and yes history is over but still. But its up to you if I went to a black union I wouldn't mind a white person joining to me that would be awesome.

Also next term am joining a all hispanic union...why? I don't know why but sounds interesting..
Reply:i dont know
Reply:Usually, the Black Student Union on any campus or school is open to everyone. So, if I were you, I'd double check the facts because it is unlawful to discriminate. It might be focused on highlighting black culture (much like a French club might be focused on highlighting French culture and the like) - which is why you might have interpreted that way. If you are uncomfortable, or if it was presented in a way that it was only for one set of students, you should talk with the principal because that shouldn't happen. My guess is that either you were misinformed or they are misinformed. If your son or daughter wants to join, they probably can. Actually, it would probably be enlightening to them (and to you as well).

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Student Edition question?

Hi, I'm currently at uni and wanting to buy photoshop cs3 extended student edition. I'm just wondering if anyone around here knows whether the purchase of this product, at a student price, is only for those students on a related course or whether you can be a student enrolled on a full time 3 year course on a non related topic eg history, english etc.

I'm only asking this as I don't want to go buying the thing if I'm not eligible.

Thanks

Andy

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Student Edition question?
You should be perfectly eligible for this. Generally the only requirements are that you are enrolled at least as a part time student. Generally you don't have to enrolled in a program that would require the use of Photoshop, just that you are actually a student.

Check with your university about buying the student edition. If your university has a student bookstore, they may have it or even be able to order it for you. If not, there are several academic resellers on line such as JourneyEd.com and Academic Superstore. They will require proof that you are a student, but that shouldn't be a problem for you.

don't get loans like the guy was suggesting - except from the student loan company - low interest rates - if you start getting loans from banks and stuff you'll get into trouble.

Askyou local education authority (LEA) they will be able to advise you on everything! and you shoul dbe able to arrange to speak with someone face to face to discuss all your concerns.

Good luck!

and good for you for getting back to education! So many people us having a kid as an excuse! be proud of yourself!

(sorry if that sounded a bit patronising! but some of my friends gave up doing anything then they had a baby and wasted their intelligence.)

8. A chemistry student accidentally spills chlorine bleach into a dilute acid. The mixture reacts and produces fumes that are inhaled by the student and that reduce his ventilation. You know that the gaseous chemical produced is a base (i.e., it releases OH- in an aqueous solution). You also know that the chemical is absorbed into the bloodstream at the alveoli. Explain why the student’s ventilation is reduced.

A chemistry student accidentally spills chlorine bleach into a dilute acid. The mixture reacts and produces...
The poisonous gas is taking over the oxygen. The body sences this but is not able to tell the difference between the poison and the oxygen. The body thinks oxygen is still present which in all reality the oxygen has decreased going to the brain and has beenreplaced by the poison which causes respitory distress due to the lack of o2 to the brain. This distress if not corrected quickly will lead respirtory arrest and cause death.

The hemoglobin in your blood wants to accept the new foregin gas more readily than the normal oxygen we breathe. However, since the body cannot process this chemical the way it does regular oxygen, the result is simply suffocation.

No election for Student council president?

I decided to run for student council president, but then found out that the teacher involved wont be having an election, but will be deciding on two co-presidents herself. She will be using two of last years student council students and picking them for president. Then i find out im the only one in the school running against these two girls from last year.I didnt think this was right so im running now for sure. It has become a matter of fairness now, it just isnt right the way its being run. The problem is, that this teacher as of right now is very angrey with me for ruining her plans for student council and causing trouble by having an election. Is it still worht persuing this fairness thing, if i could win and have to work side by side these people. When im forcing them all into an election they dont want?

No election for Student council president?
I was a student council sponsor for one year only, but this is what we do. The officers are voted on by the previous year's council. So it would be impossible for someone who has not been on student council before to be president. However, can you not run for a class representative? Honestly, I don't think you would want to jump right in to being president if you've never been on the council before. Even if this doesn't work out, you obviously want to be involved in your school, so look at other options for leadership. Good luck.

I want to obtain my student visa, to study at the USA, i am from south america... i don't understand something

please help me, I was just reading the us embassy web page, about the student visas, I am already in touch with a college at the US, and they will be sending me the I-20 form. so I am good in that aspect.

But in the page it says that I need:

Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status - For Academic and Language Students or Form I-20M-N, Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (M-1) Student Status for Vocational Students.

What I don't know is where to find this forms, and if I'll be needing both, or just one, which one, and how to know which one.???

Thank you very much

If your school in the U.S. is a large school that deals with many internationals, they probably have an office for international student issues, and they would know more about these forms than anyone on here. Check at the university and see if that office can help.

Read my student council speech and comment please?

Senate Speech

Hi everybody, and as most of you know, I’m Becca Greaney from the class of 2011 and I am running for student council senate. I think our school can be improved and that is why I am running for a seat on the senate. Some things I think that we could change for the better would be the length of the honor code and the length of our day at school. As you all know, our days are extremely long and most of my friends, including me, are tired a majority of the time. I think that if we can alter our schedule even a little bit to change this it would help us concentrate at school a great deal. I have many other ideas that I think would help us progress as a school if I am elected into student senate. I want to be part of BHS’s first student council because I believe that the council will shape the outcome of our high school career will help make the high school run more smoothly. Each decision I make will be to help improve our high school. THE REST CANT FIT SO ILL DO ANOTHER

Read my student council speech and comment please?
sounds sophomoric.

the changes you proposed must be realistic ...will it pass school administrative review? as student in a leadership position (a senator is a leader, though not over entire school) you must look at issues through eyes of the administration/school board; parents, students, and sometimes the community, at large; be able to devise a solution/compromise that will address issues in most effective/efficient means possible.
Reply:Good Job... sounds good to me.
Reply:Very poor please try again.
Reply:terrible my guess is your day isnt that long i see kids getting out of school earlier and earlier
Reply:Interesting. I think you should be more specific about the length of the school day. Do you mean longer or shorter? Somehow I think that is determined by state law and not some kinds in a student council. How about getting with some issues that you can change or at least modify. Maybe healthier lunches, or some type of charity sponsorship, or free tutor service for failing students.....rethink some of your ideas. Good luck. I hope you win!
Reply:interesting concept, except very unrealistic and needs some work.
Reply:lets see.. Im just trying to help. Dont get mad. I think you should revise it. Its confusing! You need to organize the the parts when you say you will do "this" and "that".. And,,, it depends who's voting, If you are in Middle School, Elementary School, or High school... If oyur in Elementary, make it easier and make the vocablulary more easier %26amp; understandable. If you are in Middle school, you should make it more humorous/exiting .. If in High School, I think thatll do, except the part that you need to organize your speech. I think you should write it over..

Pay off student loan with another student loan?

OK---

I have a 32,000 dollar private loan with Sallie Mae (my school is expensive, along with living expenses..I have since switched to a public university) the interest on this loan is something crazy like 14.25%..

I just got approved for a 40,000 dollar loan from Chase at 8.5% Interest, with a 1.99% origination fee. Does anyone think it would be to my advantage to pay off my high interest student loan with this new, fairly low interest student loan? I understand that the 1.99% origination fee will be thrown on top, but it sounds like it will save me quite a bit in interest (I still have 2.5 years to go!)

Any Suggestions? I'm really just thinking long term here, and want to do whats best for me in the future, such as if I don't find a job right away, etc...Thanks!

Pay off student loan with another student loan?
Is the Chase loan rate an adjustable or teaser rate that could increase? If it's a fixed rate for the life of the loan, do it. Yes, the Sallie Mae rate is rediculous. My student loan rate is 5.25%.
Reply:I'd do it, you'd save a hell of a lot on interest.
Reply:The Wachovia Education Loan has NO fees. The Chase loan does as you mentioned, and the Sallie Mae loan may have additional fees such as repayment fees. All of the these loans will be variable. Take some time to REALLY consider and understand each loan and calculate it out. Of course, only borrow what you need. Consider how long the 8.5% Chase loan interest rate is good for. Good luck.

I need your opinion. IS THIS AN APPROPRIATE STUDENT/TEACHER RELATIONSHIP?

the teacher is an atractive woman in her early 30s and the student is a boy (16 or 17). the teacher is a student council sponser and the boy is a student council rep.

the teacher is real cool. a lot of her students have her home phone number, but this one boy sometimes calls late at night (after 10) the talk a lot on the phone (some of her other students call late too) just to talk. the teacher and the student (the boy) share and take care of a puppy. some days the puppy stays with the boy and somedays the puppie stays with the teacher.

sometimes the boy and other students spend the night at the teachers house.

recently the boys car broke down and his mother was out of town. the teacher offered to give the kid a ride to school and was thinking about letting the kid stay at her house. what do you think about this friendship?

I need your opinion. IS THIS AN APPROPRIATE STUDENT/TEACHER RELATIONSHIP?
I think it is poor judgment on the part of the teacher to let students stay overnight at her house, and could open her to accusations.
Reply:no its not and this "teacher" should know better. and she even if the guy was 18 years old, she can be fired for having a relationship with a student.
Reply:No. End it NOW.
Reply:I don't think it's right, If she's giving away her phone number to all the kids in her class dose she give the phone number to the girls also?

Sounds like she's after some trouble letting boys half her age ring her in the night and talk for ages.

If it was just a friendship she would set bounderies by telling the boys not to call her so late.

It's kind of suspicious to me.
Reply:I had the same think kinda happen to me but I never had her phone number and we wernt that friendly at school, if it doesnt go any farther then that i have to it's ok, my situation was different, while talking to my teacher and my mother about my failing grade, my mother mentioned that this class should be easy for me and started to mention all the things I can do mainly fix cars, so I got to fix her car for a passing grade, and during my fixing her car I caught her looking up my shorts at my penis which excited me causing more problems I tryed to ignor her stares but they only made me harder and more embarressed I asked for a screw driver and as she got it and was handing it to me she accidentally kicked me in the croin causing me to slam my head into the bottom of the car, as I pulled myself out in pain she looking at my forhead for any injuries then she went to my groin and by now my dick was sticking out, she started to rub it to ease the pain and just about when i was about to make a mess she stopped, i finished the car and she was gone, I got a call a few years later from her about working on her car again, how could I refuse, this time we both got messy and still do.
Reply:i think the teacher is an angle

and i think the boys r lookin for a hole to dig

it usually goes like "Hey teacher leave the kids alone"

but now i would say " Hey kids leave the teacher alone"
Reply:That is completely inappropriate. I'm a teacher myself and just reading this question makes me cringe. Does she realize the position she's putting herself in? It's just so wrong. There has to be a line drawn between a student and a teacher. I also don't understand why a 30 something year old woman would want to be friends with a teenage boy. No offense, as I have a feeling that you may be the boy in the story. It's just a bad situation.
Reply:A single female teacher allowing a student to stay overnight at her home? If the school district finds out about something like that, She may be looking for a new job. This is the type of thing that gets people into trouble!! People hear about something like this and the first question they will ask is, What are they doing all night long. Teachers have gone to jail for that type of behavior with students. If your friend really cares for her , he better stop what he's doing before it's to late...
Reply:i am greatly disturbed. no teacher should give a student their home # just to talk. The kid isnt even 18 yet!!!!!!!! thats just gross!!!! it is never ok to date a minor. The End.
Reply:I think it is a matter of time before the teacher loses her job and possible gets in trouble with the law...she needs to realize the "perception" does not look good.

While the relationship could be totally innocent or may not be....only those 2 know....but if someone thinks something is going on that is not on the up and up....guess what the school will try and protect themselves and let go of the teacher....so she needs to straighten up and not be so lax....she has prob worked hard to get where she is as a teacher and it can all be taken away in an instant....

If it is anything but innocent, shame on her and I hope if that is the case she gets what is coming....it is ridiculous that are kids are not even safe from their teachers anymore...

America is going to hell in a handbasket!!

Interest Rates on Student Loans?

Hi, everyone. I have specific Qs about student loans for people who have experience in paying back or dealing with student loans. First of all, I am a recent college graduate and I will have to start paying back my student loans in 6 months after grace period ends.

Today, I looked at the interest rates of all my loans. And they all have interest rates around 6.5%. All my loans are Federal Direct Stafford Subsidized Loans. Until I checked today (I should have checked it sonner), I expected the interest rate to be around 3-4%.

1. Is my interest rate too high compared to other students?

2. Is there any way to reduce the rate through Fed. Gov. before I start paying back the loan?

3. I get so many calls from bunch of private loan companies saying they will get me the lowest interest rate possible. Should I use one of them as a last resort?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Interest Rates on Student Loans?
Congratulations on recently graduating college, that is quite an accomplishment and you should feel very proud.

First of all, were any of your Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans taken out after July 1st, 2006? The reason I ask this is because this will make a difference on your interest rate on those particular loans. When dealing with your loans taken out before July 1st, 2006 those interest rates on those loans are Variable interest rates which means they have been changing every July 1st.

As of right now you are carrying the Deferment/In Grace interest rate of 6.54% on your Variable interest rate Direct Stafford Subsidized Loans. However, once you enter Repayment status when your Grace period ends, your interest rate will go up .6% to 7.14%. As compared to other students it depends on when they took out their loans, and what kind of loans they took out, so it is rather difficult to address that part of you question.

The only way to fix your interest rate on your Federal Stafford Loans is through the FFELP Consolidation Loan Program; this is why those companies are contacting you. If you do not consolidate your Federal Student Loans, your interest rate will remain Variable and will be subject to whatever the Federal Government sets the interest rate at every July 1st. Keep in mind, when those companies are stating they will get you the lowest interest rate possible, this just means they will get you the lowest interest rate possible as dictated by the Federal Government. I hope this sheds a little light on the situation for you. For more detailed information on the FFELP Consolidation Loan Program as well as details on current interest rates please visit the source below.
Reply:6.5% is not a bad rate. I've been out of school for 15 years and have the same rate. I refinanced with one of those companies that calls you. What they don't tell you is that once you refinance once, you cannot do it again until they decide to release the loan which they never do. I owed 35k and am paying $300 for 20 years--5 years left. Don't refinance now and bite the bullet and start paying. If you defer payment the loan will still accrue interest

Apply new student loan over the default student loan ?

i own a default student loan for $2000 for Greak Lake ( the loan start at $9000, made payment $7000). now after 3 years, i want to applay for the new student loan ( back 2 college), will i able to get new loan ?

or what can i do to loan the new amount for college i will go to ?

thankx,

Apply new student loan over the default student loan ?
Your question all depends on whether or not your defaulted loan is a federal Stafford loan or a private education loan.

For federal Stafford loans, you must be out of default status before you will qualify for any new Stafford loans. Usually it takes 6 consecutive, voluntary monthly payments to get out of default status.

For private loans, the requirements for clearing the default status will vary from lender to lender depending on their own individual guidelines. You're best bet is to contact your lender personally and ask a customer service assistant.
Reply:Call this number, they can tell you whether or not you're in default and if you are eligable to apply for another loan.

1-800-4FIN-AID

If you're still in default you will not be able to apply for any loan what so ever. Federal or private. They will be able to tell you how to clear your default status. If you're not in default have them mail or fax you a letter stating that you are no longer in default. After that you are free to apply for student aid.
Reply:If you have had three years to pay off the first loan. And there

are so many waiting in line to get "their first loan." Why do you

think you should be entitled for another loan at all?

When you say, "I will go. Does that mean you didn't go the

first time, with the loan?
Reply:If you have a student loan in default you won't get a new one. In order to get the loan in default, out.......you will typically have to make 9 consecutive payments. Once you've done that, you can apply for a new loan but be prepared to have a co-signer.

Loans typically go into default after 9-12 months of not making payments or making arrangements with the lender.
Reply:Try consolidating the old loan and start making payments on it. Your payments won't be that much since you only owe $2,000. You should be able to apply for a new loan, but you won't know for sure until you actually try.

I have a student visa; can I enter Belgium *before* the valid date?

I'm an American citizen and have a student visa approved for studying in Belgium. However, I was planning on going in July to find a place to stay and learn some of the language, and my student visa says it's only valid starting on August 1st. I know that normally as an American I don't *have* to have a visa to stay less than 3 months or to enter the country. So can I still enter the country before my student visa takes effect, working off the "no visa necessary for Americans" rule, or does my new student visa override that and now I can't enter the country until August?

I have a student visa; can I enter Belgium *before* the valid date?
I don't think it should be a problem, but you might want to double check with the Belgian embassy first just to be sure.

1.Sundays-52, Sundays in a year, you know Sundays are for rest.Days left 313.

2.Summer holidays-50 where weather is very hot and difficult to study.Days left 263.

3.8 hours daily sleep- 130 days GONE.Days left 141.

4.1 hour for daily playing- (good for health) means 15 days.Days left 126.

5. 2 hours daily for food %26amp; other delicacies (chewing

Properly %26amp; swallowing)-means 30days.Days left 96.

6.1 hour for talking (man is a social animal)-means

15 days.Days left 81.

7.Exam days- per year at least 35 days.Days left 46.

8.Quarterly, Half yearly and festival (holidays)-40 days.Balance 6 days.

9.For sickness- at least 3 days.Remaining days=3.

10.Movies and functions - at least 2 days.1 day left.

If you have 35 days over the course of a year that you have exams on (I don't know where you go to school but I've never had that many) you don't take away 35 days, you take away 35 x the length of the exam. That is unless you don't eat, sleep, exercise or talk at all on those 35 days. If not, you're saying you spend 840 hours (35 days x 24 hours) taking exams. Same for holidays (40 days off just for holidays?), summer days and Sundays.

The correct way to do it would be like this:

365 days:

- 52 Sundays

- 50 Summer days

- 35 Exam days

- 40 Holidays

- 3 Sick days

- 1 Birthday

= 184 days for school work

From ONLY those 184 days left you take away:

8 hours for sleep

1 hour for play

2 hours for food

1 hour for talking

=

Leaving you with 12 hours EACH DAY for schoolwork, or a total of 2,208 hours, which is 92 days.

Take away the 2 days for movies and you have:

90 days for schoolwork.

Or was the funny part supposed to be that it's added up wrong because of bad schools?

Why are student loans so hard to get?

Why is it soo hard to get a student loan for room and board and other things that are needed to go to school. Do people relize that a lot of these students are on there own. Does anyone have an advice how to get a student loan, without a co-signer. I have little credit, but its not bad credit.

Why are student loans so hard to get?
Under your circumstance,I suggest here for you to have a visit.http://studentloan.online-helpers.info/c...
Reply:Student loans are not hard to get, anyone can get them and you don't have to pass a credit check or have a cosigner. You apply at www.fafsa.ed.gov

Here is a good publication about federal student loans. Including the interest rates and the types of the loans.
Reply:When I was in highschool, my GPA sucked and I had no problem getting an unsubsidized Stafford Loan. Basically thats a loan from the Federal government where you pay interest like any other loan but specifically for students. Not sure if my parents had anything to do with me getting the loan or not though. It covered my tuition and I think I had like $1000 left over each semester

£6000 in student debt !!! HELP?

My friend is a foriegn student and a great guy, he owes £6000 in uni fee's from completing his 1st year, however the uni want it all back in one go and his next term starts soon... He is not eligible for a student loan, and he can't get a loan to pay this off because he is a student. How can he get out of this mess and carry on his studyies here??? PLEASE sensible answers only I WANT to help the guy!

£6000 in student debt !!! HELP?
Join the army. I WANT to help you. So tell him that there's schoolin' money in the Army. If your country works that way.
Reply:tell him to contact the student union, they might be able to help. most universitys have councillors he can talk to that will have loads of information about what grants he is eligible for and how he can cope.

im sure the uni want him to stay with them and they'll do their best to meet a compromise, maybe paying off the fees over a term instead of all in one go.

has he got a job? i had to put myself through uni by working 2 jobs.

He will have to delay his second year %26amp; get a job in the mean time.

There's not really any other option is there (unless you can pay it for him)?
Reply:I am sensible, 2 of my girls went to uni and paid for all of it by WORKING THEIR BUTTS OFF in their spare time, never going pubs etc, cooking cheap but wholesome meals, they had debt but not anything like this guy!! My girls did tell me lots of stories about their mates who got loads of debt though,,,, thet were the ones out drinking on borrowed money...get a life..get a part time job...
Reply:He might be able to receive assistance from his home university (if he's a foreign exchange student). Typically, fin/aid is not available to non-residents of any country, so his best bet is to try to be financed by his own.
Reply:well, the only way is to ask money from his parents, there's no other ways and tell him not to make the same mistake, he has to learn from it once he's free. second time mistakes, shame on him.
Reply:He could possibly ask his parents to loan him the money- or he could get an advance of $ if he has a job. Sorry that I couldn't help more.
Reply:To be honest I've never heard of a University doing that to someone before, i thought you had finish your exams etc and start earning of £15.00 before you could pay it back! £6000 pounds is alot of money to pay back before September, i feel for your friend as i know what debt does to you, he's better off doing a part time job and earning extra money.

If your school in the U.S. is a large school that deals with many internationals, they probably have an office for international student issues, and they would know more about these forms than anyone on here. Check at the university and see if that office can help.

Your thoughts on student loans? Constructive v. Destructive?

As one who is so indebted in student loans that I can never afford to die, I wonder . . . . I won't go into my tirade about the financial industry or the spiral created by private student loan availablity or my preference for grants and fellowships, but. . . .

I heard today that Sallie Mae is fighting to sustain the subsidies given to private lenders that issue student loans. I had no idea that such subsidies existed (other than the interest-game), but I believe it.Of course, the banking industry is arguing that this will make loans less accessible to the disadvantaged, etc. BUT my question is this: wouldn't it make more sense to put that same money directly into the hands of the students that need it rather than subsidizing someone lending that money and guarantee-ing it in the event of default? Why are "we" (the government) paying banks money up front in order for the bank to turn around and lend the same money to "us" (the people)? How about putting that money into Americorps?

Your thoughts on student loans? Constructive v. Destructive?
It's a good thing. In general, students are a risky loan so without subsidies, loans would be hard to get and of higher interest. Without the loans (an investment in the future), many gifted people would not benefit from higher education and all people would be negatively affected. Funding via government is not cost effective and takes a strong incentive to succeed away from the students.
Reply:Student Loan Scam

http://www.townhall.com/columnists/Rober...

Democrats last Wednesday were extolling their student loan bill for opening college to modest-income Americans when Rep. Tom Price, a second-term Republican from Georgia, took the House floor. "If only this bill did what they say," Price declared. His admonition constituted more than the usual hyperbole of congressional debate.

The bill, passed by an overwhelming bipartisan House vote, was headlined as reducing the interest on federally subsidized student loans from the present 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent. Actually, it gradually reaches the 3.4 percent level on July 1, 2011. A student taking out a loan July 1 this year would pay 6.12 percent after graduation. Only 29 percent of all students getting loans would be eligible for this gradual cut. Other student loan programs will be cut to help pay for the $7 billion cost over five years. And, contrary to Democratic implications, the bill does nothing to slow skyrocketing college tuition.

Such details are obscured, however, by the brilliant success of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's "first 100 hours." The student loan bill is one of the politically popular measures rushed through opening days of the first Democratic-controlled House session in 12 years -- without hearings, without committee authorization and without meaningful debate. While Democratic support has been unanimous, Republicans are divided and listless.

In contrast to ideologically diverse Democrats who controlled Congress in the past, today's House majority members look like automatons not only in the way they look but how they talk. The hand of Rep. Rahm Emanuel, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, was apparent as Democrats newly elected under his chairmanship took the floor to deliver nearly identical speeches of how this bill will help poor students.

Rep. Ed Perlmutter, who won a previously Republican-held district in Colorado, in his floor speech used the now-common anonymous anecdote. He told of seeing "a woman whose kids have gone to school with mine" at a swim meet in Arvada, Colo. "She told me that one of her kids is in college now, and she has another that will be going in a couple of years. She is a single mom, and her kids have done well in school, but the cost of college has become prohibitive for their entire family. She said her kids have been excellent students, but she was fearful they could not get into college and be able to pay for it."

Perlmutter added that this "single mom" thanked him for this bill changing "the cost of higher education." In fact, it has nothing to do with the prohibitive cost of college. It will have no effect whatever on her child now in college. If her second child is literally enrolling in a couple of years (January 2009), the interest rate would be 4.76 percent, to be paid after the student leaves college. The mom may have thanked Perlmutter too soon.

Because Democrats are now committed to "pay-go" (offsetting all spending increases), this bill means cutting $6 billion from other federally subsidized student loan programs on top of a net $12 billion cut by the last Republican-controlled Congress.

On the eve of last Wednesday's House debate, the Consumer Bankers Assn. and the Financial Services Roundtable sent a joint letter to members of Congress. The offset cuts in loan funding, the organizations warned, "cannot be absorbed by the nation's loan providers without compromising the kinds of benefits and services now provided to college students and their families."

This warning was not be expected to impact heady Democrats, but might should have promoted among Republicans. It did not. While Democrats were 232 to 0 for the bill, only 71 Republicans followed their leadership to vote against it. The 124 Republicans voting aye included such erstwhile conservative stalwarts as Todd Akin (Mo.), Virgil Goode (Va.), Chip Pickering (Miss.), Joe Pitts (Pa.), Dana Rohrabacher (Calif.), Ed Royce (Calif.) and Todd Tiahrt (Kan.).

The once militant, united House Republicans are demoralized and on the run. They were battered in the last campaign for cutting school loans in the previous Congress and are willing to go along with a sham bill, hoping for Senate gridlock and a presidential veto.

Alleged Fraud at Sallie Mae %26amp; Student Loan Xpress: Paid Recommendations for Best Student Loans Provider

http://www.seobook.com/archives/002155.s...
Reply:I agree with you. I get so fed up trying to get student loans caught up, and payments are so outrageous. If you are in default, and have Earned Income Credit for children you claim on tax returns, the lender then takes it all. Which is not fair to our children. I am one who would spend the money on my children for things that are needed.
Reply:I don't think that a person should have to borrow money to pay for college. The State Colleges should not charge residents of that State.

It is almost as important these days as a high school degree was years ago.

It is unfair for a college to get paid higher tuition because there are too many students and that there are funds available to loan certain people. The simple answer would be to easy - build more schools.

It is unfair for a college to apply part of the tuition that it receives from one student to cover the expenses of another student in the form of scholarships.

I know a person who spent four years in college and is starting her working career $140,000 in debt. That is just plain UNFAIR.

I hear that Princeton has so many assets that if they wanted they could afford to go for two years without charging a dime for tuition. The colleges are just another big business industry.
Reply:In some cases it is like signing a deal with the devil. They will own you for the rest of your life, because they control your credit score And since the loans are under the guise of a government loan, you can never get relief from them from bankruptcy. Even though by the time the actual loan has been paid you will have paid over 5 times the amount borrowed. They sell the debt to collectors over and over and over again, and the law allows them to do that. It is legalized racketeering.
Reply:Privatizing the student loan program has been a failure. When I first went to college, the National Direct Student Program (NDSL) was administered by the government, and the interest was substantially less. Some recipients abused the program, but that will always be true. Now the loan companies are the worst abusers. Due to the greed and usury of these institutions, many of our best students are unable to continue their education, and society as a whole suffers from the loss of their talents. I expect the government to take corrective action soon. Don't lose hope, they may lower interest rates retroactively, or even "forgive" some percentage of your total debt.

I agree that free public education would be the best long-term solution, but for some reason, the trend has been away from that in recent years.
Reply:Student loans are a fact of life. However, the problem lies in how unregulated the industry has become. I asked a question very similar to yours, and got a response that was very interesting. Regulating student loans would go against everything our country values: free market (AKA greed and capitalism.) The student loan industry has exploded like a dog that has broken off of its leash. What's more unsettling is that private for-profit student lenders (examples: Sallie Mae, Wells Fargo, Student Loans Xpress... need I go on?) are getting their loans "guranteed" by non-profit organizations through a loophole in the current laws. These loans are offered federal protection without having to adhere to the same repayment guidelines that Stafford Loans coming directly from the government offer (income sensitive repayment plans, flexible deferrment options, and reasonable interest rates.) Private lenders are making a KILLING off graduates. If I had my way the lending would be directly through the government only. That way, interest rates could be controlled, and more money could be funnelled into grant programs instead of stuffing the pockets of greedy CEOs. Students NEED to borrow money, but they should be offered reasonable payment plans based on income, consolidation of ALL loans (including those that are private) and help when they need it. Education should NOT just be for the elite and wealthy. However, with all of this said students should expect to have to pay back their loans. This country is not socialist in nature, and whether one agrees with it or not, they borrowed the money and are obligated to repay it. I don't think most students want to skip out on their loans, but they want to be able to repay them and still have a decent quality of life (buying a home, having children... the American dream type of stuff.) If their student loan payments/debt are so outrageous that they cannot do that... well then getting an education tends to seem rather futile, right? My thoughts on this entire debacle is that things are only going to get worse before they get better. Congress is starting to realize that it is a problem. Get involved! Write your congress person and senator with your thoughts. That is the beauty of being in America. We CAN make change, slowly but surely. On a forlorn note... if things do not change higher education is going to start to crumble.

Question about consolidation of defaulted student loans...?

I took out a student loan 5 years ago to go to college. Defaulted on loan (financially unable to repay).

Collector for Texas Guaranteed Student Loans Blah Blah called me yesterday, and guided me through the steps for the online application for consolidating the defaulted loan here:

www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov

He said it is a government program set up to give people who have defaulted on student loans a second chance.

Gentleman told me that if my applications is approved (and it probably will be), when it is processed, the record will show that I no longer owe money on a student loan.

Question is: once the record reflects my new situation (loan consolidated, debt no longer shows up, etc.), can I apply for and get another student loan?

Question about consolidation of defaulted student loans...?
Usually you have to make 6 on time payments before they will clear your default completely.

You can go to NSLDS.ed.gov and you will be able to view your loan history. Right now your loans will show as in a default status, once that default status is removed, you will then be able to apply for fin. aid. Or as soon as you receive a letter from the Dept. of Ed (not a lender or servicer) but directly from the Dept. of Ed. you can then apply for federal aid again.

Keep good records of all your paperwork relating to the clearing of your default, as you most likely will be required to turn this paperwork into the financial aid office at the school you want to attend.

Good luck

IB and student exchanges?

Is it possible to go a student exchange program (not offered by a school, bt a rebiable company) lasting one semester being an IB student. I mean like I'd like to go but if I go on an exchange program I will fall very much behind and I'm not even sure if IB rules allow you to do exchanges to other countries during the shcool year and still remain in IB. Another qustion would it be any different if on the student exchange you went to you attended an IB school also if it is possible how would it work. Thank you very much!

IB and student exchanges?
I can only answer this to an extent. You need to talk to your school's counselor/schedule coordinator, as they'll likely know more about it than most anyone you'll find here.

My knowledge from being in the IB program makes me think that you would remain in the program during an exchange. The program itself seems to be more coordinated by individual schools than by the founders themselves. To graduate from it, you only need to have the necessary IB credits. If you can manage this with an exchange program, I don't see why it would a problem. However, I know personally that taking a single sick day makes you nearly irrevocably behind.

So the bottom line is, you truly need to talk to a counselor if you're intending to continue looking into this. You'd have to do so somewhere along the line anyway.
Reply:As far as I know, you can do an exchange and still recieve IB credits IF the school you attend has IB courses (and you take/pass them, of course). If you can't find an IB school, then you'd probably have to finish your courses when you return (which might mean staying longer in school/taking summer school classes).

Hope this helped, :)

Mortgage, Cars, Student Loan Should I Consolidate??

I have mortgage payment, two car payments and student loan. I don’t know anything about refinancing and I was wondering if I should consolidate my mortgage, two car payments and student loan.

I still have 4 more years for my cars and $50000 of student loan.

Mortgage, Cars, Student Loan Should I Consolidate??
It all depends on what the payments and interest are as well as your credit. If you have good credit than you would be better served by consolidating the debts and then taking the monthly savings and apply that to either paying down the mortgage or investing (investing being the greatest priority) you can go to http://www.flagshipfinancialmortgage.com to find out if there would be a benefit for you to consolidate.

Are the student loan people a "federal or state government or any subdivision thereof"?

The Student Loan People also known as the Kentucky Higher Education Student Loan Corporation, is an "independent municipal corporation" created by the Kentucky legislature.

I have money that I want to use to pay my student loans, but a condition on the money is that it "may not in any case be used to pay or reimburse any amount to the federal or state governments or any subdivision thereof."

Help!

Are the student loan people a "federal or state government or any subdivision thereof"?
Loans in the FFEL are from a bank or other private lender in the Federally sponsored program. Loans from the William D. Ford "direct loan" program are directly from the government.
Reply:I don't know how this is structured, but it's name tells me that it is a "Corporation" and is "independent", created to do exactly what you need; Ask them; they will know.
Reply:Yes, this is a state organization created by the legislature. It sounds like this money can not be used to pay off federal or any state debts. Bummer. Go buy a car.

Who gets student loan repayment?

I am in the army national guard. When I joined I did not qualify for student loan repayment. I thought as soon as I graduated from college I would just go to OCS and then I would be able to get it, but now I am told that officers do not qualify for student loan repayment. ....so....i need student loan repayment....I will go to OCS, stay enlisted, switch units, or even components-what do I have to do to get it?

Who gets student loan repayment?
There are multiple things you should consider before you apply for school loan repayment, like: when to make monthly payments, repayments options, as well as what are the deferments and forbearance options.

A physics student is standing on an initially motionless, frictionless turntable with rotational inertia?

A physics student is standing on an initially motionless, frictionless turntable with rotational inertia 0.31 kg·m2. He's holding a wheel of rotational inertia 0.22 kg·m2 spining at 125 rpm about a vertical axis. When he turns the wheel upside down, student and turntable begin rotating at 79 rpm.

(a) What is the student's mass, considering him to be a cylinder 30 cm in diameter?

(b) How much work did he do in turning the wheel upside down? Neglect the distance between the axes of the turntable and wheel.

A physics student is standing on an initially motionless, frictionless turntable with rotational inertia?
When the student turns the wheel 180 degrees, the angular momentum of the spinning wheel is transferred to the angular momentum of the platform. student.

L before = L after

L = I w

L(before) = I(wheel)w(wheel) = (0.22)(125rpm)

I(total) = I(student) + I(platform)

= (1/2)MR^2 + 0.31 =(1/2)M(0.075)^2 +0.31

= 0.0028125M + 0.31

L(after) = I(after)w(after)

= ( 0.0028125M + 0.31)(79rpm)

L(before) = L(after)

(0.22)(125rpm) = ( 0.0028125M + 0.31)(79rpm)

0.348101266 = ( 0.0028125M + 0.31)

0.038101266 = 0.0028125M

M =13.5471168 kg seems like a small student to me. You better check my math

b)For pure rotation, the net work is equal to the change in rotational kinetic energy

Work = (1/2) I w(f)^2 - (1/2) I w(i)^2

Marriage on Student Visa?

My girlfriend is here on a student Visa, before it expires next year with graduation I plan to propose and marry her, but was not sure if it is a lot easier just to get married while she is still on her student visa, than for her to return home for a short stay and bring her back in on fiancee visa? The only reason to wait to get married is to save money for a nicer wedding, but neither of us want to deal with all the paperwork that could become involved if we wait under the fiancee visa application.

I am under the correct or incorrect assumption that if we marry in Vegas or City Hall during her student visa stay, we will avoid a lot of the paper work?

Marriage on Student Visa?
I would talk to a immigration lawyer. I don't know if you can get married on her student visa. she can change it to get married and still Finnish school here i think but not sure. ask a lawyer to be sure.
Reply:If you marry here, in the United States, while her visa is still valid you'll avoid having her leave the United States to wait for an immigrant visa.

You will have just as much paperwork if you get married here now, go to her country and get married or send her home and bring her back on a fiancee visa. There's no difference.

You do NOT need a lawyer. It's just a matter of a few simple forms. Any high school graduate, even a graduate of a public high school, can fill these forms out.

Give up Student Council and focus on grades? Or would it benefit me more to stay on Council?

Student Council elections are coming up, and I have a guaranteed position as Deputy Prime Minister (Vice).

Yet, I've realized that. throughout my highschool career (grade 11 at the moment) my grades slowly decline as I step up in extra curricular activities, from low 90s, to mid 80s. I have been in DECA for the past 3 years, and one year being an executive. This year I'm currently Minister of Student Resources in Student Council. What I'm asking here is advice to whether or not to focus on grades more with clubs on the low side, with expected marks of around a 90. Or should I take the position as vice and make my focus around extra curricular activities, of course with the effort of trying to do good in school, without a high expectation of higher grades of course. I do have other activities also. Those being a job, Tae Kwon Do, Badminton, and possibly other clubs but with less concentration with those. What would Universities prefer, Truthfully?

Thanks a lot everyone. Johnny

Give up Student Council and focus on grades? Or would it benefit me more to stay on Council?
I'm not really sure but in my opinion you should lessen your activities...the student council is better for you than Badminton...See,you can still take badminton after you graduate whereas you can only be in the council when you are in school,obviously...its an opportunity you cannot get again after you graduate..besides the student council gives you the opportunity to strengthen or build your leadership qualities which i think is important.just try to balance school and your co-curricular activities...to answer your question, i think you should focus on your grades more with clubs on the low side, with expected marks of around a 90 or you could take your position as vice and focus on your studies at the same time and lessen your other activities such as badminton, tae kwon do and some other clubs..i hope you make the right decision.all the best.
Reply:Student-body government in highschool is farcical. The students really do not govern themselves since the principal can overrule them. It is basically a social club.

You are in high school to learn academic subject matter. Any focus on student-body government, quite simply, is a waste of your time.

If a student wants to work in the art field to make money for college what kinds of jobs can they do?

If the student wants to work to pay for college, what are some art related jobs the student can do?

An undergrad student?

If a student wants to work in the art field to make money for college what kinds of jobs can they do?
What about a local art supply store. A pottery shop. A photographer (knowing how to take photos of your art is VERY important, especially if you can't afford to have someone else take it in the beginning). Or maybe an art gallery. You could also sell your art on ebay, or at local markets.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

Applying for student dependent visa 4 months before my wife sponsor visa expires?

I am based in Dubai and i have recently got married. my wife is a student in UK. Her student visa is going to expire in september however after that she will also get 1 year extension based on international student graduate scheme. I just want to know is it a bit too late to apply for the visa as embassy might reject my visa based on this that my wife has only few months left in her studies ... i have all the funds and documentation complete so there is nothing WRONG i am trying to do. all i want is to accompany her.

Applying for student dependent visa 4 months before my wife sponsor visa expires?
You should be able to apply for a student dependent visa through your wife. As long as her additional visa is in place then they will see she has more than 4 months left, I doubt you will have any real issues in gaining the visa.
