Before the SNP got in Government there was a lot of talk that they were going to cancel all the student debt of those students who took out student loans.Since then I have heard very little about it.I have looked at the SNP website and I can't find any new information.Does anyone know what is happening about it recently? Are there any web links?
SNP - Cancelling student dept?
After a quick search on Google. I believe that all this is coming from rumours and rumours of politician manipulation before election, from the following press release, it is just a wish expressed loudly by many (for future students).
SNP Education spokesperson Fiona Hyslop today (Tuesday) said it's time to remove the burden of student loan debt for Scottish domiciled graduates and for education to be based on a person's ability to learn, not pay.
Ms Hyslop made the call after FOI published by the SNP showed that the maximum student loan debt in 2006 reached by a Scottish student was almost £30,000, nearly double the level of maximum debt in 2002.
Ms Hyslop said:
"These figures confirm that student debt is a serious problem in Scotland. With students now reaching a maximum debt of nearly £30,000 and the average student graduating with around £12,000 debt, this is further evidence that it's time for a complete overhaul of the system.
"That is why an SNP government will abolish the Graduate Endowment tuition fee, replace the expensive and discredited Student Loans Systems with means-tested student grants and remove the burden of debt repayments by Scottish domiciled graduates.
"Access to education must be based on the ability to learn, not the ability to pay - an SNP government will free Scotland's graduates from student loan debts so they can get on with their lives.
"It's time to give young Scots the best possible start in life. It's time for the SNP."
Reply:I think you still owe them.
