I'm a current college student, i'm almost done with my basics but after that, i have no idea what I want to major in.(But I do want to finish college.)I was considering joining the Air Force since i'm not sure what I want to major in right now. And I can take classes while in the AF.Also I already have $16,000 in student loans. I found online that they will pay up to $10,000 in student loans. Anyone in the AF here, and have any personal experiece with them and going to college, and having the AF pay the money the recruiters promise you. Is there time to attend classes and study even?
Current College Student Considering Air Force?
You can work with the Air Force and at the same time continue with the college studies.
Reply:Don't enlist, if that's what you're thinking. Join the AFROTC, I'm not in it, but I have 4 housemates that are, it's a very good option if you want a good career after and your education basically paid for.
Reply:Do AF ROTC, they still pay for your education and you enter the service as an officer. Go to the Air Force Recruiting website and compare the differences in pay between enlisted personnel and commissioned officers. And that doesn't mention all of the other perks officers have over enlisted personnel.
Reply:The Air Force offers several programs for college and commissioning. My advice to you is to get any promise from the recruiter in writing, in your contract. Sounds to me like a bootstrap program is best for you; the Air Force gives you the rank of E5, SSgt, and lets you finish your undergraduate studies. Then you have an obligation to serve. I'm a little rusty on the specifics. I can tell you that they will help you find something that interests you that is also in demand in the Air Force, so use that to your advantage. Your undergrad degree is almost irrelevant in regard to your career field, but if you specialize in law or medicine, or some other specific thing like that they'll use that. Otherwise it can be almost any deree. They will also afford you the opportunity to work on your Masters or post grad degrees. It's a very symbiotic system and if you're interested in serving, you'll love it! I did 20 years and retired as an E7 Master Sergeant, and part of my priviledge was to mentor the young officers. Good luck!
