I am a junior right now, but I am curious about whether or not I will qualify for a student loan once I start college (an UC).
- I am Asian; greencard holder
- my parents make a total of $200,000 a year
- I will be 18 the summer before college
I have the impression that if my parents are "rich" enough to pay tuition, I will have a harder time getting a student loan.
However, once I turn 18, I will be considered an adult who is financially separate from my parents... Therefore, I would be actually considered "poor" right?
Can anyone tell me about how this works? My parents want to pay for my college so that I can concentrate on my studies, but I want to get a student loan and then pay it off myself.
SO, based on my information above, would I be able to get a student loan? What kind?
I can get a student loan?
This is a pretty standard question. Without spending too much time in a financial aid office, there is plenty you can do get the process started.
Start by going to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and filling out the online form called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Everyone is eligible and it costs nothing. Just takes a few minutes. Federal Stafford loans are the best deal going. After finding out what you are eligible for in terms of subsidized stafford loans, you can figure out if that is enough to finance your tuition and expenses. In most cases, it isn't. If you find that you need more money then you are offered, you may want to try a private student loan.
The best thing to do is compare the different private lenders out there, which can be done at http://www.finaid.org/loans/privatestude...
Most of the rates are very similar but do a little research and pick one that you think is best. I would suggest Think Financial. The application process is very quick and easy, and the check is sent directly to you so you can use the money for whatever you want. The limits are much higher with private student loans, up to $40,000 per year. You can find out more information about a Think loan at http://www.thinkfinancial.com . Good Luck.
Reply:You and your parents need to go online and file a fafsa. The web page is www.fafsa.ed.gov. Make sure you select 08-09 and have you and your parents 07 tax return if you filed. You may not be elegable for grants, but on the application you can select loans. You should be able to get a stafford loan. And sorry but you won't be considered indepentent until you are 23 or 24 I can't remember which. You should also check out scholarship options.
Reply:There are many different websites out there that have knowledge on this subject.
I just did a google search and found this website :

Reply:Well I got a student loan because my parents are poor and I'm still struggling to pay it back 8 years later. I wish I had the luxury of having rich parents to pay for it. Take my advice, let your parents pay for it and be thankful!
