Goverment Student Loans- is it too late?

My husband and I are going through a rough time (who isn't these days?) and have to find a different housing situation. (We have a month) I am a full-time student at a local community college, and will be transferring next year to the local university. Will government student loans (Stafford, etc.) be available for housing/room and board costs for this semester? I've received a pell grant, however, that didn't leave me with much money for a security deposit/utility deposit/etc. (Nursing/Pre-Med student... one of the most expensive majors at my college, wouldn't you know it?) Can I still apply and possibly receive a Federal Stafford loan when the semester is already underway? How would I go about doing this? I definately appreciate the advice- I'm the first to go to college in my family, and am seven and a half months pregnant- needless to say, there's a lot on my plate right now!

A Stafford loan would help you to cover some extra expenses. If you did not check that box on your FAFSA form, you can go online and submitted an updated FAFSA or go in to your school's financial aid office to do it. I don't know much about mid-semester loans. Most loans are disbursed at the beginning of each semester. I would go in to the financial aid office at your school (if you can't - call them) and talk to an officer that can advise you on your options. The only problem I see is that you can't take loans past your school's cost of attendance. That amount is determined every year and should be available on the school's website. So if the COA at your school is only $3,000, then the most you could get in loans would $845. Does that make sense? Anyway, you won't know until you try, and the financial aid office is the best source of help.

Reply:jml offers the best advise. dont listen to anyone here offering loans with fake-looking web sites.

i dont know if it is too late to get loans for this semester- that is up to the school, but you can use them to cover educational expenses (day care, rent, a computer-if they determine you need it).

i would talk to the financial aid office to see what they will allow, because you can get up to 7500 in stafford loans assuming you are a freshman.
